Dr Paul Luckman,
Director Creative Decisions Ltd

Paul first graduated with a degree in geology from Victoria University, New Zealand, and later obtained his Masters and PhD degrees in engineering science at the University of California, Berkeley - with a particular emphasis on geotechnical risk and reliability analysis, and decision analysis.  He has worked for the New Zealand Ministry of Works and Development, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the New Zealand Crown Research Institute Landcare Research, and Metrowater, Auckland's water utility, as well as for Creative Decisions Ltd. 

An early highlight of Paul's career was participating in the international Japan - New Zealand - USA Dry Valley Drilling Project, where he conducted research into the Quaternary glacial and climate history of Antarctica, and submarine and subglacial volcanism associated with Mt Erebus on Ross Island. 

As a scientist, Paul's research and consultancy has focused mostly on land stability and stabilisation, plant-soil interactions, erosion, sedimentation, land use change impacts, environmental management, and development issues.  Especially in later years, his particular research interest lay in GIS-based spatial models, decision support systems, and use of knowledge-based systems to capture expert and local knowledge about evolving catchments and land use systems, and the benefits of silvopastoral (tree - pasture) systems, ecological restoration and ecological rehabilitation.  More recently, as a consultant, his work has included projects on new forms of integrated catchment management, urban stormwater and environmental management, spatial modelling of urban emissions to air and water, sustainability assessment, and visions and strategies for sustainable urban development. For several years Paul led the engineering services group at Auckland's largest water utility, Metrowater, to conduct engineering investigations and develop the business cases for capital asset investment decisions - at the same time contributing to improved frameworks and processes for making those investment decisions.  Decisions most often related to asset replacement and renewal, local improvements to the reticulated networks to meet levels of service requirements for water supply and wastewater, and the demands of growth and development.   

In November 2010 Paul returned to give his full attention to developing the business of Creative Decisions.  The focus is on further advancing the hypergovernance approach to provide conditions for uptake of the NZ2100 reporting standard for sustainable development, integrated catchment management, building a KiwiGrow Network of collaborating users, and strengthening the common ground between the sustainable development work and the successful market research and statistical services branch of the company led by his co-director, Maree.

Maree has a career in agricultural research,
statistical consultancy, and market research for the agricultural sector in New Zealand.  Maree has worked for the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the New Zealand Dairy Board, the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute, Fonterra, and The Nielsen Company, as well as for Creative Decisions Ltd.

Maree has a wide variety of skills in multivariate statistics, experimental design and analysis, product development, sensory data analysis, data acquisition and survey research.

Maree consults full time for Creative Decisions Ltd.  Aside from the enjoyable experience of raising a family in California, and living and working for a period in the United Kingdom, a highlight of her career has been an overland trip from Delhi to Istanbul, Turkey, passing through Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran.
