Creating the future - meeting the challenge of climate change through sustainable development and KiwiGrow (181K)
Global warming represents a huge challen(181K) ge to mankind - today, as well as in the future. It is human nature, however, to be sceptical of information that is bad news, or requires us to change in ways that are difficult for us. And so we have the ongoing debate about whether man-induced global warming is real, and, if it is real, whether the horse has bolted anyway, and all that is left for us to do is adapt.
Proponents of sustainable development have always seen climate change as just one of many issues faced by the people of this planet - others being poverty, disease, human rights, ecosystem pollution and degradation, loss of biodiversity, and access to resources such as energy, land, and clean freshwater. The lack of a widely acceptable coherent framework for pursuing these goals in an integrated way has limited the effectiveness of sustainable development as a motivating force. On the face of it, however, sustainable development is a much more compelling mission than combating climate change. Too many people see only negatives in the battle with climate change.
The NZ2100 model and KiwiGrow provide a means for placing sustainable development at centre stage, and developing an international collaborative response, something that a focus purely on climate change has been unable to deliver. Among the benefits of a response to global warming that centres on NZ2100 and KiwiGrow are:
- We commit ourselves to making positive contributions to the world, including minimising detrimental emissions.
- We commit ourselves to reporting on our performance through an NZ2100 scorecard which is part of a global reporting system, which can be used to track emissions, our responsiveness, and our adaptation, as well as the wider impacts of both problem and solutions.
- NZ2100 and KiwiGrow certification of companies can be used to label trustworthy suppliers of carbon credits, to provide the basis for a viable, cross-cultural international emissions trading system, needed to help developing countries use the resources of rich nations to develop in ways that are sustainable.
- The universality of NZ2100 and KiwiGrow provides the basis for transformative change, which is required if we are to develop a suitably timely response to global warming.
The solution to climate change is found amid the solution to many other global problems - including the problem of building an ethical global financial system.
